Sorting Options

Word Sorter Alphabetical Tool

Sort, filter, and format your text with powerful options.

Key Features

  • Multiple Sort Orders: You can sort your list alphabetically (A-Z, Z-A), numerically (Ascending, Descending), or completely Randomize it.
  • Flexible Input Separators: Unlike many tools, you can select multiple separators at once. If your list has items separated by commas, spaces, and new lines, just select all three options! It also supports custom separators.
  • Advanced Filtering:
    • Remove Duplicates: Instantly clean your list by removing any duplicate entries.
    • Ignore Words: You can sort a list based on the text after the first, or first and second, words. This is perfect for lists where items start with "A", "The", numbers, or other prefixes you want to ignore.
    • Remove Characters: Easily strip out unwanted characters (like punctuation !,.?) from your entire text before sorting.
  • Customizable Output: Join your final sorted list with the separator of your choice, including a comma, space, new line, or a custom one.
  • Easy Data Handling:
    • Load Sample: Quickly see how the tool works with pre-filled sample data.
    • Upload/Download: Process local .txt files and download the results with a single click.
    • Copy to Clipboard: Instantly copy the sorted text to use anywhere else.

Common Use Cases

  • Organizing Lists: Alphabetize lists of names, inventory items, glossary terms, or references.
  • Data Cleaning: Take messy data pasted from a website or document and quickly reformat it into a clean, sorted list by removing duplicates and unwanted characters.
  • Sorting Numerical Data: Organize a list of high scores, product prices, or survey results in ascending or descending order.
  • Randomizing for Fairness: Shuffle a list of participants for a giveaway, create random teams, or randomize a study guide or playlist.
  • Content Preparation: Prepare keyword lists for SEO or marketing by sorting them alphabetically and removing duplicates.
  • Formatting Bibliographies: Sort a list of articles or books while ignoring initial words like "A," "An," or "The."

How to Use

  • Provide Your Text: Paste your text into the "Input Text" box, type it in manually, or click Upload Text to load a .txt file from your computer.
  • Choose Input Separator(s): In the "Input Separator(s)" section, select one or more options that match how your items are currently separated. For example, if your list is apple, banana, orange, you would select "Comma" and "Space".
  • Select Sort Format: Choose your desired sorting method from the dropdown (e.g., "Alphabetical (A-Z)").
  • Apply Additional Options (Optional): Check any boxes for extra processing, like "Remove Duplicate Lines" or "Ignore 1st word when sorting".
  • Choose Output Separator: Select how you want the final, sorted list to be formatted (e.g., "Linebreak" to have each item on a new line).
  • Generate the Result: Click the big blue Generate button.
  • Use Your Sorted Text: Your clean, sorted list will appear in the "Result" box. You can then click Copy Text or Download (.txt).

Common Questions

Most likely, the selected "Input Separator(s)" don't match your text. For example, if your text is item1,item2,item3, you must have "Comma" selected as a separator. If you have spaces and commas, like item1, item2, item3, you should select both "Comma" and "Space" for the best result.

Your data is 100% safe and private. The entire tool runs locally in your web browser using JavaScript. No data is ever sent to or stored on any server. Once you close the browser tab, it's gone.

The tool looks for the first number in each line. If a line contains no numbers, it is treated as having a very low value. This means in an "Ascending" sort, all text-only lines will appear at the beginning of the list. In a "Descending" sort, they will appear at the end.

There isn't a dedicated "undo" button, but your original text remains in the "Input Text" box, so you can easily adjust the settings and click Generate again. The Reset button will clear everything to start fresh.
