A GPA Calculator (Grade Point Average Calculator) is a tool designed to help students calculate their average academic performance over a period of time — typically a semester, year, or entire degree program. It converts letter grades (like A, B, C) or numerical marks into grade points, then averages them based on credit hours or course weights.

How a GPA Calculator Works

  1. Input Courses & Grades
The user enters each course along with its:
    • Course name or code
    • Grade (A, B, C, etc.) or numeric score
    • Credit hours (or units)
  2. Convert Grades to Points
    The calculator converts each grade into a standard grade point (e.g., A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.).
  3. Compute Weighted Average
Each grade point is multiplied by its course’s credit hours, then summed and divided by the total credit hours:
    GPA = ∑(Grade Points × Credit Hours) / ∑(Credit Hours)
  4. Output the GPA
The tool displays the final GPA, often with an option to:
    • View semester GPA and cumulative GPA
    • Add, remove, or edit courses
    • Save or export results

Types of GPA Calculators

  • Semester GPA Calculator: For one academic term.
  • Cumulative GPA Calculator: Tracks GPA over multiple semesters.
  • Weighted GPA Calculator: Accounts for course difficulty (e.g., honors or AP classes).
  • Unweighted GPA Calculator: All courses have equal weight.
